About this event
The San Diego State University Center for Autism is committed to providing you with free workshops that provide evidence-based options and information for people on the spectrum, their families, and service providers. We are very pleased to host our community partners Speech Pathology Group and Comprehensive Autism Center for this series of workshops called, “Let’s Talk Parent Training Series.”
THE KEY SKILLS SERIES
This series is designed to be taken in order as a cohesive series though you are welcome to take them on a class by class basis. Each training will build upon previous trainings’ information and an assessment tool will be provided for families to use throughout the process.
KEY SKILLS: ASKING FOR ITEMS, ACTIVITIES & ATTENTION, AND LEARNING TO SAY NO

This presentation details the importance of communication skills around requesting for items, activities, attention, and refusing items they don’t want. Parents will be able to assess their child’s current abilities for these skills and learn how to teach missing skills across a variety of functioning levels.

KEY SKILLS: TOLERATING ADVERSITY

This presentation details the importance of developing strategies to tolerate or cope with aversive situations that will ultimately benefit them later in life. Parents will be able to assess their child’s current ability to tolerate adversity, and learn how to teach missing skills across a variety of functioning levels.
Your Presenter
DeAnna Mercier Glass, M.Ed., BCBA:DeAnna has worked in the field of Behavior Analysis since 2002. She earned her Master's Degree in Education, Children's Mental Health and Applied Behavior Analysis from Johnson State College in her home state of Vermont. Since becoming Board Certified in 2006, DeAnna has overseen behavioral programming in non-public schools, provided extensive training and consultation to large groups of special educators, has supported intensive in-home programs, and spent 10 years mentoring and supervising a large group of Behavior Analysts within a private ABA Company. DeAnna is passionate about helping students learn in the least restrictive environment and also supporting special educators and behavior technicians with developing an understanding of behavior so they may be more successful in their work.
About SPG & CAC
SPG is a team of highly regarded Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational and Physical Therapists, Behavior Analysts, and School Psychologists serving adults and children throughout California since 1989. The SPG Community includes the Southern California based Comprehensive Autism Center (CAC) providing intensive and focused Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Services. Today, CAC operates three centers that provide a hybrid program that may include in-center and in-home treatment for families living with autism, located across Southern California. The programs are designed to teach the critical skills children need to lead productive and happy lives. CAC also offers a full range of services including training, tools and coordinated care to guide families through their journey.
About the Center
The SDSU Center for Autism is an interdisciplinary group of researchers and clinical scientists focusing on improving the lives of children, adolescents, and adults with autism spectrum and related disorders. The Center has an extensive research program, from basic sciences to implementation, with a strong lifespan approach.
