About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Learn how key duplicating machines operate to index the original and key blank and then precisely trace the shape of the original onto the copy. MakIt Labs has two vintage manual machines, and they are both fun to use.

Make a key for one of our classroom padlocks, or bring in one of the following keys to duplicate: Master M1, Kwikset KW1, or Schlage SCH1. These are three of the most common keys out there, and we have enough blanks to make three keys per student.

MakeIt Labs members who take this course are authorized to use the machines, located in the Soft Metals Shop, to duplicate keys on their own.

The class only takes about an hour, and every student gets hands-on experience with the machines.
