Join us for the June Eye Opener Lunch: "From Pasture to Plate: The Science Behind Your Summer BBQ." What do steak, science, and student success have in common? Dr. Chad Carr! As Florida’s State Meat Extension Specialist, Dr. Carr works to make sure the meat on our plates is safe, sustainable, and top-quality—while also inspiring the next generation of meat-industry leaders. From hands-on youth programs to research fueled by real industry questions (and a few cows), this session serves up a behind-the-scenes look at how meat science is making a meaty difference. And with grilling season just around the corner, you’ll leave with a new appreciation for what goes into that perfect summer BBQ.
This event will be held at the UF Beef Teaching Unit, a state-of-the-art facility completed in 2018. This 90-acre farm, located near UF’s main campus, serves as a hands-on learning environment, featuring spaces for classroom and laboratories, a 200-head capacity feedyard, and a diverse cow/calf operation with approximately 40 cattle of various breeds and production levels. As a hub for teaching, research, and innovation in animal sciences, the facility offers a fitting backdrop for this event’s focus on agricultural advancement and community engagement. Parking is easy, close, and free! Guests may park in the Beef Teaching Unit Lot, located directly in front of the building.
