About this Event

Welcoming inclusivity and diverse points of view are a major focus of the First Fridays: Welcoming 2020 speaker series, so we are particularly delighted to host architect and trans activist Julia Oderda as part of our ongoing WELCOMING 2020 discussion. Since coming out as transgender in 2016, she has been a public advocate for creating space for trans people to be themselves and to be accepted in society. Her series topic: Creating Welcoming Environments for Trans and Non-Binary People through thoughtful design and personal empathy. Oderda has worked in the field of architecture for twenty years and with the firm VCBO since 2005. She has specialized in several design project types over her career, but has worked primarily in envisioning educational facilities, recreation, and multi-family housing projects. For her, architecture works best when it both functions and inspires, creating inviting spaces and more fulfilling communities.

Oderda will share how her architectural work and personal experiences have determined that society can be more inclusive and welcoming of trans people specifically, but really all people equally by extension. This conversation follow-up will include how to make trans people feel more comfortable in coming out and transitioning, how our companies and workplaces can be more welcoming and inclusive, and how the built environment can do a better job to make space for everyone to be comfortable existing in the world.
