About John Cleary

After 35 years shaping the New Orleans sound, Grammy-winner Jon Cleary returned home to record The Bywater Sessions with his all-star band, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen. Captured live in his Bywater studio, the album blends beloved classics with fresh favorites, channeling the raw funk, joy, and soul that’s defined Cleary’s career.

The expanded lineup features longtime Gentlemen Cornell Williams (bass) and A.J. Hall (drums), joined by Nigel Hall (Hammond organ), Pedro Segundo (percussion), Xavier Lynn (guitar), and a powerhouse horn section. Together, they deliver the “sophisticated, nasty, good-time funk” that has packed New Orleans clubs like the Maple Leaf and Tipitina’s for decades.

Born in London but a New Orleanian at heart, Cleary cut his teeth with legends like Dr. John, Earl King, and Bonnie Raitt before launching his celebrated solo career, which includes the Grammy-winning Go-Go Juice. With The Bywater Sessions, Cleary affirms his place in the city’s living tradition: grooves that are alive, breathing, and irresistibly funky.
