Blackbird Productions presents Jazz Session No.3: 'Take Five Below' with The Sharp Seven.
The Sharp Seven came together with the help of Vancouver Island University Big Band Director Greg Bush, who united an inspired mix of Courtenay/Comox musicians and VIU Music students. The project began when Ralph Barrat, a charismatic and in-demand jazz vocalist, mentioned his dream of singing with a big band. The result was Ralph Barrat and The Sharp Seven—affectionately known as #7.
With original arrangements by Greg Bush and Troy Jakubiec, the group developed a distinctive sound that blended big-band richness with small-ensemble chemistry. When the band celebrated its 10th anniversary, Ralph decided to take a hiatus—but the rest of the crew was having too much fun to stop.
After Ralph’s departure, The Sharp Seven lineup featured Paul Nuez on trombone, Grahame Edwards on bass, Michael Eddy on keys, and Jack Reynolds on sax and flute.
In more recent years, the addition of Mel on vocals—along with Beau on drums and Dave on trumpet—has brought a fresh spark and creative energy, propelling The Sharp Seven into its next chapter with warmth, style, and plenty of groove.
