Jacobsen Hive Program Presents: Late Season Beekeeping

Come join us for an exciting hands-on experience at Zidell Yards!

Our late season beekeeping field event is perfect for beginners preparing their hives for the fall and winter months. Learn about the physiological changes happening within the colony by opening up a hive! This third event in the series will provide practical tips and insight for bolstering hive health, evaluating honey stores and transitioning colonies into the cooler season. This educational event features a special guest speaker, Mia Raiah, Beekeeper and land steward with The Black Oregon Land Trust. Mia Raiah is ritualist who works with beeswax, flame, and ancestral memory to create healing, handcrafted offerings through her practice, Primary Rituals.

Join us for a hands-on candle-making experience using beeswax from local hives. In this workshop, we’ll take turns dipping cotton wicks into a cauldron of golden beeswax, crafting our own tapered candles! An optional light sandwich lunch from Olympia Provisions will be served.

This event will be held entirely outdoors in our SW Riverfront Apiary at Zidell Yards. Comfortable clothing that is suitable for outdoor work - like long sleeves and pants - is recommended. Please note that a limited supply of protective beekeeping gear (such as gloves and veils) will be made available, but participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have it.

Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to learn something new, and connect with nature and the local beekeeping community! Please do not hesitate to reach out with any specific questions.

Hope to see you there!

Frequently asked questions

Who is leading this event series?

Emily Schmiedel the Lead Beekeeper for the Jacobsen Co. Hive Program, an Oregon native and a stewardship-style keeper; she believes in caring for bees by bolstering resources, while not intervening too much with their natural processes. Emily loves to teach and learn from the bee community.

What is the Jacobsen Co. Hive Program?

The Jacobsen Co. Hive Program is an all-in-one beekeeping resource. We offer on-site educational consultation and hive maintenance, as well as educational experiences at our apiary on the SW Riverfront at Zidell Yards. We release a limited run of microlot honey from this site early each year

Where is the Portland Riverfront Apiary?

Our apiary is located at Zidell Yards! We have hives just along the water at the back of this private property located in an industrial area adjacent to the South Waterfront. There will be signs guiding guests to where the hives are located, just below the SW side of the Ross Island Bridge.

Where will I park?

There will be free parking right next to the apiary. More specific instruction will be provided prior to the event.

Can I bring my own lunch

Of course, but an optional lunch is provided at an additional cost. We have allocated about a half hour to eat together. Please bring prepared foods that can be eaten somewhat quickly, that do not require heating.

Is it safe to be up close and personal with Honey bees?

The short answer is yes! It is important to understand that honeybees do defend their hive and can sting when they feel threatened. Although it is unlikely that you will get stung at this event, it's not impossible.

What should I wear?

Please wear clothes that are comfortable to move in. We suggest long sleeves and long pants, and closed toe shoes. If you already have protective beekeeping gear, please bring it along!
