AN EXHIBITION

23.03.19 & 24.03.19

Jack’s Magazine opens its doors for a unique site specific exhibition of moving image, sound and installation works as part of Melbourne Design Week 2019. Artists and guest speakers examine and extrapolate Victoria’s cultural narratives through an analysis of the material history of basalt within the framework of deep time. From shaping the Victorian landscape to in-turn being reshaped by humans, basalt transforms into foundations, iconic buildings and streets of our urban centres in the form of bluestone. It is critical that we understand bluestone not only as relic, as symbol, as commodity, but as lava flow, geographic modifier and as a definitive carrier of indigenous and colonial stories. Exploring these relationships may generate new readings of the past and new perspectives of a future fast approaching.

Built in 1870 and active until the 1990’s, Jack’s Magazine is a series of large bluestone structures which were used for storing gunpowder and explosives. These materials were fundamental to gold mining, extraction and war. The assemblage of material and historical processes that intersect through this site form a broad field of themes that have been interrogated. Normally closed to the public, these buildings are protected by significant earth mounds and a large bluestone perimeter wall.
