PARENT EDUCATION WORKSHOP: For Parents and Caregivers

It's Not Just What Happens to Our Kids, It's What They Make of it that Matters

In the course of childhood (and beyond), our children are bound to face limits and requirements that are hard for them, moments when they feel put-upon, disappointed, misunderstood, or excluded. We can’t spare our kids those experiences but we can influence the meaning they make of what happens, and support their ability to navigate life’s inevitable upsets. As parents, how we relate to our children’s challenges and the messages we give about managing those is key to shaping their resilience and self-confidence. This presentation will provide parents with tools to: support your children's capacity to handle disappointment and other setbacks; give messages that promote self-esteem and self-reliance; set limits in a way that empowers your children and strengthens their confidence; and encourage attitudes that translate into social and emotional well-being.

Sheri Glucoft Wong, LCSW is a family therapist, parent educator and consultant.
