Event description

Description

Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force in May 2018. Failure to comply could result in stiff fines.

The U.S.-EU Safe Harbor Frameworks are no longer legally recognized as adequate!

In 2016, the International Trade Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce launched the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Framework to provide U.S. companies with a mechanism to comply with EU data protection requirements when transferring personal data from the EU to the United States.

At this program:

Find out why the European Union is a key market for U.S. Businesses

Gain in-depth knowledge about GDPR requirements including:

  • Accountability & transparency
  • Security and privacy by default
  • Communication with your customers and business partners

Discover how GDPR can impact your business including:

  • What processes and tools should be put in place
  • How to start the compliance process
  • How to turn GDPR into a business advantage

Learn about the Privacy Shield Program and how to apply:

  • New Requirements under Privacy Shield
  • Application and Review Process

Participating organizations are deemed to provide “adequate” privacy protection, a requirement for the transfer of personal data outside of the European Union under the EU Data Protection Directive.

Hear from Our Experts:

Isabelle Roccia, Policy Advisor, U.S. Mission to the European Union. Isabelle served on the negotiating team of the “EU-US Privacy Shield” and the U.S. delegation for the U.S.-EU Cyber Dialogue.

Michelle Sylvester-Jose, Policy Advisor, Data Flows and Privacy Team, International Trade Administration. Michelle is considered an expert on Privacy Shield.

Local Company that has gone through the process.

Who should attend?

Any company doing business with the EU transferring personal data. It applies to any U.S. company that holds/processes/transfers EU personal data (have EU staff, sell to an EU customer, have a database of prospective EU clients, and to those merely monitoring behavior online). Individuals involved in legal/compliance, technology companies, consulting companies, marketing companies, healthcare companies, and/or anyone transferring or sending personal data electronically.

A very limited amount of one-on-one appointments are available. Please call or email Margaret Gottlieb at (314) 260-3786 or margaret.gottlieb@trade.gov if you are interested in speaking with one of our Commerce Representatives or would like more information about the event.
