About Our Speaker: Ambassador Daniel Taub

Daniel Taub is an Israeli diplomat and international lawyer. He was born in Britain in 1962 and was educated at University College, Oxford; University College, London and Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. He is an experienced peace negotiator who argues that ancient Jewish wisdom offers a third way.

Drawing from this tradition, and from his own experience at the heart of some of the world’s toughest negotiations, in his most recent published work, Beyond Dispute, he makes the case for a radically different approach to help us come closer to truth and to each other.

Daniel moved to Israel in 1989. Since that time, he has served in the Israel Defence Forces as a combat medic and as a reserve officer in the international law division. He began to work for the Israeli Foreign Ministry in 1991 and has held many legal and diplomatic posts. From 2011 to 2015, he served as Israeli Ambassador to the United Kingdom, and from 2015 to 2021 as Director of Strategy and Planning of the Yad Hanadiv (Rothschild) Foundation.

He has written extensively on Israel and the Middle East, including articles in The Times, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph and The Huffington Post. He is an accredited mediator and runs difficult conversation laboratories bringing together participants from different ideological backgrounds. Daniel has written drama for Israeli television and theater and for the London stage. A popular lecturer on biblical texts, he is also the author of Parasha Diplomatit, a collection of diplomatic insights on the Bible. He lives in Jerusalem with his wife Zehava. They have six children.

About Our Organization: Speakeasy Tel Aviv

Speakeasy Tel Aviv is a nonprofit initiative led by a dedicated group of English speaking volunteers with a mission to build a community of like-minded peers, interested in diverse speaker forum events of intellectual and cultural substance. We host monthly events, engaging with some of the most prominent voices in Israel, and from around the globe. Our community is focused on ages 50+ Olim and English-speaking Sabras from all over Israel. We maintain a non-partisan attitude towards the issues of the day, and look forward to welcoming you to our warm, wine-filled events.

According to some accounts, the word ‘speakeasy’ is originally derived from ‘speak-softly shops’ which were illegal clandestine drinking establishments in England during the 19th century. The name referenced the need for secrecy, with customers being asked to speak quietly while inside to avoid detection. Our Speakeasy Tel Aviv events strive to embrace this honorable culture of carefully curated speakers worth imbibing with intellectual curiosity, maintaining off-the-record confidential 'Chatham House Rules', while also partaking in our wine socializing mingling time, meeting friends, old and new alike.
