Inventing Languages: A Conversation in Language Construction
Date and time
Description
Please join the UC San Diego Library for a conversation with Grant Goodall (Professor and Language Program Director, UC San Diego Linguistics), David J. Peterson (Creator of Dothraki, Game of Thrones), and Paul Frommer (Creator of Na’vi, Avatar). Moderated by Tamara Rhodes (Linguistics Subject Librarian, UC San Diego Library) on Friday, February 1, 2019 from 3-5 p.m. in the Seuss Room at Geisel Library. This event is free and open to the public.
Constructed languages are well-known in science fiction and fantasy literature as a way to create an immersive world-building experience. The inventors of these languages often give us insight into the ethnography of the imagined groups that speak them.
