Introduction to the Potter's Wheel (Ages 14+)
Overview
Class Dates: Jan 12, 19, 26, Feb 2, 9, 16, 23, and March 2, 2026
In this 8-week beginning wheel class, you'll get hands-on instruction and individual practice time at the wheel, with experienced potter Sara Ballek. Through group demos and individual support, Sara will be there to guide you and answer questions along the way. Throughout this 8-week class, you'll learn the basics of wheel-thrown pottery from start to finish. Everything from centering clay on the wheel, creating simple utiltarian forms, trimming and glazing the work you make. Students will learn to create functional, food safe, cups, bowls, and handled mugs that can be used at home.
No prior experience with clay is needed- just bring your curiosity and be ready to get your hands dirty and have fun. Wear clothes you don't mind getting clay on (it washes out) and closed-toed shoes. For wheel work skip jewelry, roll up your sleves, tie back long hair, and keep nails trimmed for the best experience. Clay and all tools needed for class are provided by Paducah School of Art and Design.
