Why won’t my patients just do what I tell them to do? For most of us, the challenge to engage and activate patients/families in their own health is both real and real important.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based communication style that focuses on language, both the clinician’s and that of the patient. The strategies of MI are collaborative and evocative and an overall goal is that change arises from within, rather than being imposed from without.
Join us for a highly interactive workshop to build your skills in motivational interviewing and effective behavior change. You will be guided through a variety of learning activities designed to explore and practice new ways of transforming your conversations with patients and families. Learning activities will include live demonstrations, video examples, 'real-plays', case studies, small group exercises, and participant practice with feedback.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This program is designed for health care practitioners who spend time encouraging patients and their families to consider choices and changes that lead to better health. The targeted audience includes Physicians, Registered Nurses, Pharmacists, Physical Therapists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Dietitians, Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Respiratory Care Practitioners, Exercise Physiologists, Diabetes Educators, Patient Navigators, Care Coordinators, Case Managers, Care Transitions Teams, Home Health/Visiting Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Medical Assistants, Medical Fitness Professionals, and other allied health professionals.
This workshop is designed for those with no prior experience or minimal to moderate exposure to Motivational Interviewing. The course is intended to provide an introductory framework to develop, and further strengthen, basic skills.
DAILY SCHEDULE - FRIDAY & SATURDAY, APRIL 28-29, 2017
- Registration, coffee/tea, snacks: 8:00 – 8:30 a.m.
- Program: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Lunch breaks: 1 ¼ hours each day
- Morning and afternoon breaks

What's the refund policy?
Cancellations: prior to April 8, 2017 will receive a refund minus a $100.00 processing fee and cancellations after April 8, 2017 are non-refundable. Your ticket/registration is transferable to another participant/attendee of your choosing at no additional cost.

About Becky Lang, EdD, RDH, MCHES
Becky is a licensed dental hygienist and health promotion facilitator by background and has experience working in the areas of university teaching, clinical practice, public health, consulting, training and has 14 years in the field of health coaching. She currently serves as Adjunct Professor at Des Moines University Doctor of Osteopathic program, consultant and motivational interviewing trainer for oral health professionals at Colgate-Palmolive, and designer and trainer for the Motivational Interviewing Physician Office Health Coach Training Program for health systems throughout the United States. She is a Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), Certified Health and Wellness Coach through Wellcoaches, member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and member of American Dental Hygiene Association (ADHA). She is a published author including a chapter on health behavior change in a textbook for dental health professionals. She is passionate about living our best life and how we can enhance health and wellbeing in our lives and those we serve. She enjoys adventure traveling having hiked around the Swiss Alps, experienced a safari and rode on an elephant in Africa.
About Jody Hereford, MS, BSN, RN
Jody is a registered nurse and exercise physiologist by background and training. Her passion and career have been focused how we create better health for those living with chronic illness and multiple chronic conditions. She’s spent many years as a consultant and educator, has directed hospital and community-based cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation services, managed high risk employee populations at the Boeing Company, served as a designer, facilitator, and faculty member of the Clinical Health Coach Training Program which is geared to transform health care conversations alongside the transformation of care processes. She solidly believes that the way in which we talk with people about their health substantially influences their personal motivation for behavior change. She is a Certified Coach, a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and is a Past President and Master Fellow of the American Association of Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) and the 2013 recipient of the Award of Excellence. In her free time, Jody can be found exploring and enjoying the Colorado high country with her Golden Retriever Therapy Dog, Pearl.
