Introduction to iNaturalist: Sylvan Gardens

Pull out your phone and head out to the trails with the iNaturalist app! Our guide James Junda will introduce us to this powerful new tool for both the citizen and professional naturalist. We will learn to ID what we see, how to get expert feedback, and share our observations with biological researchers all within iNaturalist.

The Sylvan Gardens conservation area contains almost ten acres of undeveloped land and 600 feet of freshwater pond shore, portions of which are home to state-listed native plant species. It is a green refuge for plants, wildlife and people. Rustic trails traverse a variety of settings, leading visitors through deep woods and open fields to broad pond views.

Your Guide:

James Junda has been studying birds for 20 years but watching them his whole life. His journey started during summers with his grandparents at Schoolhouse Pond in Chatham and has taken him to five continents documenting birds. He has been operating songbird banding stations at Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary and around the lighthouse on Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge since 2011.

Special Notes:

With an ADA-compliant trail, this walk is accessible to people who may not be ready for a rigorous hike. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for a short walk.
