COURSE OVERVIEW
As a HOA board leader, you are a trusted member of your Homeowner Association (HOA). Your leadership is important. Whether you are new to your board, have board experience, or are an interested HOA resident, our Introduction to Homeowner Associations (HOAs) for Board Leaders Course is for you. You and your fellow board leaders will govern your HOA, administer its business operations, and promote a community of neighbors. You will have significant authority and fiduciary duties. Your HOA homeowners also have significant rights, protections, and obligations. While HOAs vary in external characteristics, they are far more alike in the challenges they face and in their need for informed and effective board leadership.
In the Introduction to Homeowner Associations (HOAs) for Board Leaders Course we provide a broad review of the foundational knowledge and skills you need to be a successful HOA board leader. You will receive a certificate of completion.
Course Description:
The course is organized into seven modules that total 90 minutes. Course topics include:
1. The Homeowner Association, Laws Affecting HOAs, and HOA Governing Documents
2. HOA Board Authority, Fiduciary Duties, and HOA Management
3. Homeowner Rights, Protections, and Obligations
4. HOA Meetings, Elections, and Recordkeeping
5. HOA Budget, Assessments, Collections, Contracts, and Financial Records
6. HOA Maintenance, Reserves, and Insurance
7. HOA Community Living
Learning Objectives
1. Identify two laws and five HOA governing documents and give examples of how they affect board actions and homeowner rights and obligations
2. List and give an example of three board fiduciary duties
3. Identify and give an example of three homeowner rights and protections
4. Identify and give an example of three homeowner obligations and responsibilities
5. List three types of HOA meetings and their requirements
6. Describe three HOA board governance actions
7. Describe three HOA board business administration actions
8. Describe importance and differences in HOA master insurance and homeowner HO6
9. Identify three ways that HOA boards promote cooperation and participation
10. Identify three ways that homeowners benefit from informed HOA board leadership
Instructors:
Lynn Boergerhoff has nine years of experience as an HOA board president. Lynn founded the HOA Leadership Network in 2018 to connect and support HOA board leaders through education, collaboration, and research. He designed and created this course to educate HOA board leaders and HOA residents interested in joining the board.
Mark Luis Foster has five years of experience as an HOA board leader and owns his own marketing/communications consulting firm. He is a business partner with Lynn in running the HOA Leadership Network, LLC and has presented to many HOA board leaders and HOA groups across the metro area.
