Do I need gear to begin classes?

Accepted Answer

No, the club will provide your starter gear and will coach you through the basics of gear purchase towards the end of the intro classes if you would like to purchase your own.

Will I get to swing steel swords?

Accepted Answer

Eventually, all introductory students will be introduced to steel swords; holding them, swinging them against dummies, and the safety behind steel sword sparring. However, please be aware that using steel will be a privilege that you earn after completing your course.

Question 3

What if I do not complete all eight classes in the span of time offered?

Accepted Answer

You can continue to come to introductory courses until you finish your required eight classes. An instructor will determine whether you have to purchase another series of classes or if you can finish up your required learning without paying a second fee.

Question 4

I want to learn rapier or saber and do not enjoy learning longsword, will the classes cater to me?

Accepted Answer

Somewhat. Longsword is the basic weapon of most HEMA tournaments and HEMA schools. We will do some introductory classes on rapier and saber. But most importantly, you will learn the basics of footwork, calisthenics, body movement, and sword discipline.

I am not an exercise-centric person are these classes for me?

Yes! Our goal at Waterfront Historical Fencing Club is not to turn you into a professional tournament fencer (unless that is YOUR goal) or into a sword-swinging warrior (probably not anyone's goal in 2025) but to help you create a balance of wellness, fitness, and exercise that makes you feel great!
