Featured Presenters: Kristen Beall LCSW-C, ICGC-II, CAC-AD; Kenneth Crawford
Session Description: Gambling Disorder may be referred to as a Hidden Addiction as it is the only behavioral addiction classified as a Substance Related and Addictive Disorder within the DSM-5. With the expansion and access to legal forms of gambling throughout Maryland, the risk of harm expands as well. These dangers can go undetected if we are not integrating a conversation about gambling into our supportive work with others. Gambling harms may include bankruptcy, divorce, loss of friendships, housing insecurity, and unemployment. The Center hopes that healthcare professionals are inspired to implement an evidence-based gambling screening tool into their regular practice and start to have a conversation with people in their community.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Identify the signs and symptoms of Gambling Disorder, using the DSM-5 criteria to formalize a diagnosis of the Substance-Related and Addictive Disorder;
- Review at least 4 evidenced based gambling screening tools, with tips to incorporate gambling related questions into a biopsychosocial assessment;
- Describe stories from persons in recovery from Gambling Disorder to better prepare for working with others impacted by gambling related harms.
