INTRODUCTION TO DATA JOURNALISM with Lam Thuy Vo from Buzzfeed News
An intensive bootcamp to get started in data journalism
Class meets:
- Saturday, March 16 from 10 am to 4 pm and
- Sunday, March 17 from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm
The cost for this workshop is $499; $399 early bird rate before February 1
What data story do you want to tell?
This workshop is a hands-on project-based bootcamp: you will be working on a data story you bring to class during the workshop under the guidance of seasoned data journalist Lam Thuy Vo. Along the way, you will learn how to navigate data analysis, cleaning and visualization tools.
Data is everywhere and more abundant than ever – from election results and census reports, to Facebook updates and image uploads. In other words, we're inundated with data and need to learn how to use various tools so we can fully leverage statistics and facts as sources for stories. Through this workshop journalists and other communicators will learn how to use a some of the most widely used tools — including Google Spreadsheet, Google Refine and Adobe Illustrator — to find and tell data-driven stories.
This intensive 2-day course will teach you:
- How to find and analyze datasets,
- How to investigate stories buried within them, and
- How to visualize them.
You will be able to use your new skills to work on your personal data project or a dataset that the instructor provides.
What to bring: You may bring your laptop if you have the software listed; otherwise you will be able to use the school’s computers during the class.
Level: Beginner
