Fundamentals of commercial building controls, building management systems, and related energy efficiency opportunities

  • Welcome and Introductions
  • What Is a Building Management System (BMS)? – Overview, key definitions, and acronyms
  • HVAC Equipment Overview – Air handlers, boilers, chillers, and other mechanical systems
  • BMS Field Devices – Sensors, actuators, valves and power supplies
  • Input/Output (I/O) Layer – Controller types, Inputs and Outputs, and everything in between.
  • BMS Protocols and Front-End Interfaces – Legacy systems, BACnet MSTP/IP, LonWorks, Modbus, REST API, and user graphics/trending
  • Mass Save speaker: programs and incentives
  • Project Opportunity Types – implementation strategies to save energy with building automation
  • Modern BMS Trends – Cloud, edge, open systems, AI, and fault detection/diagnostics
  • Why BMS Matters to Energy Efficiency and Decarbonization Program Administrators – Grid-interactive buildings, demand response, and the evolution from lighting retrofits to advanced controls

Coffee and light breakfast will be available starting about 8:30am. Class will start at 9am. Lunch will be provided. Continuing education units (CEUs) will be available through UMass.


Instructor: Dan Quigley (Distech Controls)

Dan Quigley has 18 years of experience in smart building management. As a Business Development Manager in the Acuity Intelligent Spaces Group at Acuity (Distech Controls), he leverages his experience in smart building management and energy efficiency to bring solutions to new and existing customers.

Dan previously served as the Director of Engineering and Building Systems at Boston University, where he led a team responsible for the Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Automation, Engineering, and Energy within the facilities group. Dan managed significant projects aimed at improving energy efficiency, decarbonization, and building infrastructure capital asset renewal.

Dan holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a focus on Energy and Sustainability from Boston University as well as a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from Northeastern University. He is a Certified Energy Manager and participates in professional organizations such as ASHRAE and AEE. He has also spoken at industry conferences, including ASHRAE's first Decarbonization for the Built Environment conference in 2023.

Dan lives right next to Boston, MA with his wife, son, and their dog Nova. He enjoys traveling, a fun round of golf and watching the New England Patriots win!
