Introduction to Box Making
Event Information
About this event
In this introductory class, we will cover the basics of box making, a fundamental skill in woodworking. We’ll cover the basics of shop safety, understanding lumber, wood grain and movement, and wood joinery principles. We'll also cover fundamental techniques in hand tool woodworking, including hand sawing, hand planning and chiseling. During the class, we will build a beautiful curly maple and walnut keepsake box, designed by Jack Cerchiara, Fine Furniture Maker at Salish Sea Woodworks. The design is based upon traditional Japanese Tomobako boxes, but with a modern twist. This is a two-day class, the first day will be spent on instruction and building the main box. The second day will be spend on building the top and finishing the box. Approximately 2-3hrs each day.
This class will be taught over two nights, Monday 5/16 and Wednesday 5/18 at 7PM. You will need to be at both nights to complete the class and the project.
