3-Hour Workshop

Date: Thursday, February 19, 2025

Time: 6 - 9 pm

Description: In this class, we will explore two different non-adhesive book bindings that require minimal tools, a simple pamphlet binding and a multi signature binding that is a perfect little notebook. These two useful bindings will form a basic knowledge to move on to more advanced binding styles.

Tuition: $65 + $15 materials

Note: We really want you to join us in the studio! Full and partial tuition scholarships are available to offset some of the financial burden of attending a class.

Materials: All materials included! This includes a couple simple tools students can take home for continued practice at home.

Location: Contemporary Craft, TImmons Studios (5688 Butler St., Pittsburgh, PA 15201). Note, this workshop will take place in the Paper Studio, which is on the first floor of the building.

There are 2 entrances to the Timmons Studios.

• One entrance is facing Butler Street. To access the Paper Studio from the Butler Street facing entrance, there are a total of 8 stairs to ascend.

• One entrance is facing 57th Street. This entrance is accessible by ramp, with no stairs to ascend. The Paper Studio is down the hall from this entrance.

Cancellations and Refunds: Workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If workshops must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded through Eventbrite, or you may leave your workshop fee in your Contemporary Craft account for future workshops.

Refund Policy: Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three-business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.

About the Artist Michaela Waltz studied book binding, Japanese paper making, paper marbling, and printing, with her mentor, Jana Pullman, at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA). Michaela also taught classes in Japanese calligraphy, and hanging scroll making at MCBA.

Michaela has also been involved with the design and production of dozens of books with several small press publishers in Fedogan & Bremer, The Sidecar Preservation Society, Dim Shores, Word Horde, as well as as her own The Nepenthes Press.

Work she had done for The Sidecar Preservation Society was nominated for the World Fantasy Award in 2002.
