Spend the evening learning the simple and satisfying art of block printing from Bay Area artist and printmaker, Amy Torgeson!

In her work she uses the strong, structured shapes found in typography along with the organic and improvised marks uncovered while printing by hand. Her favorite printing methods include block printing, monotype printing, screen printing and cyanotype printing, and often in combination. Block printing was the first method she learned and she continues to go back to it for simple repeats and bold shapes. The readily available tools and non-toxic inks make it a wonderful introduction to printmaking and an easy method for printing at home.

At the end of the workshop, you'll leave with your own designed and carved rubber block, a set of cards printed with your designs and the knowledge and skills to explore this centuries-old method on your own.

Special note: Feel free to bring image ideas. Image size should be no bigger than 3 ¾ x 2 ¾. Simple images are best for this introductory workshop.

Amy Torgeson is an artist working in printmaking and collage. Her work is influenced by nature, textiles and the colors and textures gathered through travel. She uses wooden typography blocks as the basis of her printing and is drawn to the graphic yet imperfect quality of printing with these blocks by hand. Her prints reflect a modern, abstract sensibility and often focus on the direct experience of color, shape, line and pattern. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and two children and works from her studio in Sausalito.
