About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Rooted in the work of Mary Whitehouse and Janet Adler, Authentic Movement is a practice of deep inner listening.

With eyes closed and attention turned inward, we follow subtle impulses as movement arises from within.

In the presence of a compassionate witness, we enter a space where the body speaks, the psyche moves, and the unseen finds form.

This is different from a dance class. There is no right or wrong way to move.

All that’s needed is a willingness to be present with what arises in your body.

Led by Deniz Oktay, Founder of Williamsburg Body Mind Therapy. Deniz is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist, Board Certified Dance Movement Therapist and Registered Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist. Deniz holds a Certificate in Authentic Movement.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need dance or movement experience to join?

Not at all. This practice is about inner listening—not performance. All bodies and levels of experience are welcome.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing you can move in. Layers are helpful so you can stay warm or cool as needed.

Will we be moving the entire time?

No. The workshop includes time for settling in, guided warm-up, movement exploration, and optional verbal reflection.

Is this a therapeutic group?

While the experience can feel therapeutic, it is not group therapy. It's a space for personal exploration and embodiment.

What should I bring?

Just yourself. You’re welcome to bring a journal, water bottle, and anything that helps you feel grounded.

Is this workshop trauma-informed?

Yes. The space is held with care and respect for individual boundaries and nervous system sensitivity. You are always in choice.

What if I can't afford the fee even at the sliding scale offered?

Your presence is what matters most. If additional financial support would make attendance possible, please reach out. (deniz@denizoktayssp.com or 917-608-5541)
