Introduction to Acrylic and Gouache Painting - ‘Still Life’.
Overview
Discover the art of painting through the timeless tradition of still life. In this workshop, you’ll learn to mix colour with intention, explore composition, and bring everyday objects to life using both acrylic and gouache paints.
Held at the ever so cool 'Shop Gal' in Fitzroy!
Suitable for ages 14 and up.
Join Melbourne artist Melissa Grisancich for a hands-on class where you’ll create your own artwork on canvas and paper, inspired by a beautifully arranged still life scene. Traditionally, still life painting celebrates simple, familiar objects—flowers, fruit, vessels, or fabrics—used to explore light, texture, form, and the quiet poetry of the everyday.
Melissa Grisancich (b. 1987) is a Melbourne-based multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, and textiles. Drawing inspiration from 1960s–70s design, comics, religious iconography, and her Italian heritage, she blends contemporary storytelling with a nostalgic, handmade aesthetic. A 2018 Archibald Prize finalist, Melissa has exhibited across Australia, Europe, Japan, and the United States.
You’ll learn to mix your own colours from observation using a traditional limited palette, while experimenting with the unique qualities of both acrylic and gouache—two expressive, adaptable, and forgiving mediums.
Note: we will be using Artist Quality paper / canvas and high pigmented artist quality paints for you to get the best experience possible .
Along the way, we’ll explore colour theory, composition, brushwork, and the layers that bring a painting to life. You’ll also gain insight into materials, mediums, varnishing, and finishing techniques—plus how to keep developing your practice at home with confidence.
I look forward to painting with you!
Important things to note.
- Disability access is limited- the studio is upstairs with no lift. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience.
- Please arrive on time as class will kick off pretty quickly so we have enough time to paint and time for demonstrations. ( class duration is 3 hours ) there's time for coffee breaks too.
- We don't provide aprons so please consider wearing clothing you don't mind getting paint on as it's hard to remove once dry. I do have some tricks up my sleeve if we can catch it before it's dry! Feel free to bring an old op shop painting shirt or apron.
- I encourage to have coffee beforehand to avoid spillage in the space - we will have coffee breaks too with some beautiful cafes nearby! Please bring a water bottle if you need.
- Parking - as the class is 3 hours I suggest using the Cole's carpark thats behind Johnston street ( you enter via Argyle st.)
- No shows will not be refunded.
