No experience needed! This class is designed for absolute beginners.

What will I learn in the class?

You’ll learn basic sewing skills, including how to use a sewing machine, threading, stitching straight lines, and simple techniques to start your sewing projects.

Do I need to bring any materials or supplies?

No, all materials and sewing machines will be provided for you.

Can I bring my own sewing machine?

Yes, we encourage you to bring your own machine so that you can learn how to best operate as soon as you get home.

Is the class suitable for kids?

Absolutely! This class is designed for adults and children 8 years old and up.

Is parking available?

Yes, there is plenty of street parking nearby and public transit options are also accessible via the red lines and all busses that go up North Capitol street. We are aroud M street or where North Capitol intersects with New York Avenue.

Whether you've never touched a sewing machine before or you're finally ready to dust yours off, this updated Introduction to Sewing class is designed to give you the skills, knowledge, and confidence to start sewing from scratch. This is not your average intro class—we go deeper than just pressing a pedal. You'll walk away understanding how sewing works, how to use your machine properly, how to work with fabric, and how to begin your own projects with ease.

What You’ll Learn

The Fundamentals of Cut & Sew Design We’ll start with a breakdown of how garments are constructed—explaining how fabric is shaped and stitched into wearable pieces.
Your Basic Sewing Toolkit We’ll go over the essential beginner tools and explain how to use each one, so you’re ready to build your own sewing setup at home.
Understanding Your Sewing Machine You’ll learn to identify and operate key machine parts across different models—whether it's your first time or you’re refreshing your knowledge.
Threading Techniques We’ll teach you how to confidently thread both drop-in bobbin and front-load (feed-in) bobbin machines, so you can sew on a variety of machines.
Fabric Fundamentals You’ll learn the difference between structured vs. stretchy fabrics and how to sew them effectively using proper stitch techniques.
Stitching Practice You’ll practice straight and zigzag stitches, learning how to backstitch and reinforce seams for durable, professional results.
