Explore the art and science of rotoscoping—tracing over live-action footage to create animation. In this course, students will examine the technique from both an artistic and analytical perspective. We'll compare the distinct approaches of studios like Fleischer and Disney, highlighting how each used rotoscoping to achieve different effects. Students will film themselves and use that footage as the basis for a rotoscope animation project. In addition to creating compelling visuals, we'll study how rotoscoping helps animators understand motion. You'll learn how to break down movement into keyframes, extremes, and breakdown drawings, and see how gravity affects the body, clothing, and surrounding objects. Whether used as a visual effect or a research tool, rotoscoping offers profound insights into the physics of animation. This workshop is ideal for anyone seeking to refine their observational skills and add greater realism or stylistic nuance to their work.
