About this event

  • Event lasts 4 hours

In this introductory workshop you will be shown a variety of basic skills to help you learn how to navigate using just a map and compass - no phones needed! I will be covering how to orientate the map using a compass, how to decide which path you should take, how to read map symbols and finally how to work out distance and time to get to your chosen destination.

Important note regarding parking: For those who choose to park at Mytholmroyd Community Centre, please note you will have to download an app called RingGo to pay for parking. If this is going to be an issue for you, please research other places to park in advance of the session as I will be unable to help you with this on the morning it starts!

The workshop will last four hours, from 1000am until 2.00pm, with a mix of hilly and flat sections. Some pathways are well maintained, others are rougher and could be muddy in places. Starting from Mytholmroyd Community Centre, the route goes through a variety of local countryside, but never higher than 300 meters. You will need something to keep you dry, something to eat and drink, and if you do have your own map, feel free to bring along with you but this will not be neccessary as we will be using mine! I will also introduce you to the different kind of maps in the area and which ones to use next.

Frequently asked questions

What sort of experience and qualifications do you have?

I am a fully qualified Mountain Leader who has been assessed by a member of Mountain Training Association. I have over ten years experience as a leader, including seven years teaching navigation to young people and adults

What sort of equipment will I need?

You should bring with you something to keep you dry if it rains, something to eat, something to drink and any personal medications you may need. A small pack to put everything in is a good idea. You do not need any navigation equipment at all, but please bring along with you if you have any.

How difficult will the walking be?

We will be going up a significant hill, to an altitude of around 250 meters. It will be hilly, with some steep sections.

What if it rains?

The walk will go ahead even if it rains. However, there are some weather conditions where it will be cancelled. These include thunderstorms, and high wind. I will be using the Met Office weather forecast as a guide and will notify any participants the night before if it is going to be cancelled.

What if I can't make it?

If you have signed up for the event but cannot make it on the day, or simply feel like you would rather not take part when the time comes, then please let me know as soon as you can.
