Intro to equityXdesign: live, remote, 5-week cohort (Spring 2022)
Event Information
About this event
This class is designed for folks who are new/newer/newish to equity design and are looking for accountability and community while they 1. learn the fundamentals of Intro to equityXdesign, 2. gain language, frameworks, and conceptual understanding around what equity design means and looks like, and 3. make connections with other absurdly wonderful and like-minded folks 💃🏽
There are two parts to this class:
1. The homework you’ll do for ~2 hours every week outside of the workshop on your own time (rest assured: we’ll show and tell you exactly what to do and how to do it), and,
2. The live, remote sessions we’ll have together once a week for 5 weeks on Tuesdays at 12 pm est for 90 minutes each, in which we’ll engage in deeper dialogue around what we learned during homework time and what it means for us and our work. We’ll be sure to give more context using examples and tell stories to bring the lessons to life, and of course give time for Q&A 🤗
This workshop will require approximately ⏳3.5 hours of your time⏳ every week for five weeks (that’s 2 hours of outside-of-class homework time and 1.5 hours of in-class time per week).
WHO THIS CLASS ✅IS✅ FOR:
🙋🏽♀️ You’re new/newish to equity design
🙋🏽♀️ You enjoy engaging in community in real-time – in this case, that means having frequent discussions during class time in breakout rooms with other folks in the workshop (many of whom you probably won’t know beforehand)
🙅🏽♀️ You’re looking to understand equity design concepts and get some language around what equity design means and looks like in your work
🙋🏽♀️ You’re good to do two hours of homework outside of class every week, as long as you have accountability/deadlines
WHO THIS CLASS IS ❌NOT❌ FOR:
🙅🏽♀️ You’re not new/newish to equity design
🙅🏽♀️ You’re an introvert and deeply uninterested in having to talk to strangers in breakout rooms every.single.week.
🙅🏽♀️ You’re ready to build your skills, gain tools, and really work on implementation of equity design concepts (in that case, check out our more advanced upcoming Problems with Problems Workshop and Train the Trainer Series or peep our asynchronous classes (they contain our 🤩entire🤩 equityXdesign learning arc)
🙅🏽♀️ You’re looking for direct instruction because having to do a bunch of homework outside of class isn’t really your bag

✔️ THIS SPACE IS DESIGNED FOR BEGINNERS: This is an intro class, not an advanced class…if you’re looking for skill-building, tools, implementation guidance, etc. check out our more advanced upcoming Problems with Problems Workshop and Train the Trainer Series or peep our asynchronous classes (they contain our 🤩entire🤩 equityXdesign learning arc)
✔️ LOTS OF INTERPERSONAL INTERACTION REQUIRED: This workshop requires loads of engagement/interaction/conversation and requires you to 1. Talk to folks you probably won’t know beforehand, and 2. TRANSPARENT PRICING POLICY:
Why is this priced lower than your other offerings?
This is our lowest-price live offering because, if you're new to equity design, Intro to equityXdesign is a great way to dip your toes into what we do and how we do it. It’s a lot of folks’ first touchpoint with our work, and we so wanted to make it super accessible. It’s also an intro class, which means it will give you a good introduction to the foundations, but it’s not the place to do higher-level skill-building or learn about tools and implementation…so in that sense, introductory course = introductory price 😎
Why are group tickets less expensive than single-person tickets?
We offer significant discounts on group tickets because taking this course with your coworkers is extremely helpful -- if y’all come as a group, you’ll be able to think and talk about the concepts in terms of real-life challenges your org and team are experiencing (which is truly invaluable for when the rubber hits the road and it’s time to actually redesign things, have hard convos, etc.).
Also: we encourage lots of people to sign-up because a huge value of this course is in connecting with other like-minded, awesome folks who are interested in redesigning our world for equity, liberation, and belonging.
Who gets discounts and how do those happen?
Folks who are signed up on our newsletter were offered a discount on single-person tickets via email. Folks who were already enrolled in our asynchronous online courses were offered a small bump on the aforementioned discount via email.
What if someone wants to attend, but their job won’t pay and they can’t afford it?
It’s important to us to go about teaching equitable design equitably, so we’re offering 20 enrollments on a pay-what-you-can basis -- please email shakirra@equitymeetsdesign.com and we’ll give you instructions for how to enroll.
