Butterflies have long been associated with death and the afterlife. Many cultures view butterflies as powerful symbols of transformation, resurrection, and the eternal soul. Join us as we learn to preserve these beautiful creatures while taking in the surroundings at the oldest existing cemetery in Sacramento.

This is a hands-on, beginner friendly class in which we will be positioning and pinning a real butterfly! This class features the option to select from three different species; the uniquely shaped amber Orion Butterfly($85, includes 6x6" frame), striking yellow and black King Swallowtail ($90, includes 8x8" frame), and the stunning blue Ulysses Swallowtail ($98, inclues 8x8" frame). King Swallowtail and Ulysses Swallowtail are avaialble as add-ons when purchasing your tickets. All ticketing fees are included in the price.

This class includes a pinning kit, your butterfly, glass pre-matted frame, all instruction, and access to a digital butterfly pinning course to take home (to save your memory!). Note: you will be mounting your butterfly at home after it has had time to dry.

Frequently asked questions

I'm a little nervous about touching bugs, is that okay?

Totally fine! I will have gloves if you're feeling a little icky about touching your bug and I am here to help guide you through everything. Many people who take my classes are nervous in the beginning but are often proud of themselves in the

Can I bring my friend to watch?

Due to limited space only ticket holders will be permitted in class. Standing room may be available or friends/family may take the time to browse the market.

Are your insects ethically sourced?

This is a very subjective topic. I prefer to say that my insects are "responsibly sourced" because ethics will vary from person to person. I select insects that are not threatened, whose populations are stable, and source from sellers who support farms. This topic will be explored during class.

Why is there a shellfish allergy warning?

Crustaceans as well as insects are classified in the animal kingdom as arthropods. Because they are distant cousins, insects and crustaceans both contain similar proteins in their joints and exoskeletons. While rare, those with shellfish sensitivities can experience similar reactions with insects.
