Join Savanna Institute's Grazing Technical Provider, Julie Hager, and see Agroforestry in action at Hillside Pastures with our Silvopasture by subtraction system.

Silvopasture describes trees integrated into livestock pastures. Farmers graze animals on grasses and the fruit, nut and seedpods that fall from the trees. Well-managed livestock can be vital to making farms function as healthy ecosystems. Livestock help clear weeds and control insects and pests. They scratch and dig to prepare ground for planting and spread and cycle nutrients through excretion. A silvopasture system can be established by subtracting trees from a wooded lot, or by adding trees to a pasture.

Site Expectations

There is no paved area or indoor facilities on the farm. We will be walking on uneven terrain for about an hour. Bring a chair if you would like to spend time sitting at the beginning or end of the event. There will be a pop-up tent available at most events that will provide shade & an area to rest.

What to Bring, What to Wear?

Please dress for the weather and to keep yourself comfortable (weather appropriate clothes, sun protection, closed-toed shoes). Long pants are recommended because of tall grass and bugs.

Where to Gather?

Look for the white canopy tent!
