Are you a postdoc or PhD candidate curious about internships or experiential learning opportunities? Wondering how to find, apply for, and succeed at an internship in the age of COVID?

Attend this event to:

Hear about the experiences of panelists who participated in internships or experiential learning opportunities in the past two years; and
Learn about OCPD's Intermediate Career Exploration class, Grad 285: Internships and Experiential Learning (GSICE). Applications are open on a rolling basis, until March 17, 2022 or until the program is full. The class takes place in Spring 2022.

Panelists

Zak Doric – PhD candidate (Neuroscience) in the Nakamura lab at UCSF/Gladstone

Zak did a week-long internship at Bain & Company (a consulting firm) and 3-month summer internship at Flagship Pioneering (a venture firm that creates breakthrough life science companies). Zak also participated in the OCPD's Intermediate Career Exploration (GSICE) course.

Katerina Popova, Ph.D. – Vice President, Research Analyst, Aquilo Capital Management and UCSF alum

Katerina did a week-long internship with Bain and a three-month internship at the investment fund where she currently works. Katerina also participated in the OCPD's Introduction to Career Exploration (MIND) and Intermediate Career Exploration (GSICE) courses.

Lin Song, Ph.D. – Postdoctoral scholar in the School of Medicine (Helen Diller Cancer Research Center)

Lin has been working part-time as a Postdoctoral Leadership Fellow at the UCSF Graduate Division for over a year. Lin also participated in the OCPD's Introduction to Career Exploration (MIND) course.

Fauna Yarza – PhD candidate (Biomedical Sciences) in the Chou Lab

Fauna did a four-month internship at Octant during Fall 2020, followed by two months of part-time consulting on the same project. Fauna participated in the OCPD's Intermediate Career Exploration (GSICE) course.

About Intermediate Career Exploration*: Internships and Experiential Learning (GSICE)

Once you've narrowed down your options and identified a career you think you might enjoy, it's a good idea to find some experience and explore the career in greater depth. A weeklong consulting workshop, perhaps? A three-month internship? A lectureship? A part-time grad student position at UCSF? Or maybe you’re even ready to start applying for full-time jobs?

Join this class if you’re ready for a bootcamp that will prepare you to find and apply for opportunities. You’ll get your LinkedIn in order, create a résumé, practice interviewing and negotiating, and learn about those fabled “soft skills” (like navigating workplace politics). By the end of the class, you’ll have applied for at least one experiential opportunity, and you’ll be prepared to hit the ground running.

*Introduction to Career Exploration (Grad 213) is not a prerequisite for Grad 285. The only requirement is that you have at least one career path you feel ready to explore in greater depth.
