Tetralogy of Fallot is a common form of congenital heart disease, which is well-understood in terms of anatomy and hemodynamics. However, surgical and interventional treatment strategies are rapidly evolving. This joint session featuring speakers from the Japanese Society of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery and the Young Hearts Council will explore one versus two staged repair as well as timing of pulmonary valve replacement for Tetralogy of Fallot.

Speakers:

Kisaburo Sakamoto, MD is President of Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Children's Hospital in Japan and is a consultant surgeon of the department of cardiovascular surgery. Dr. Sakamoto is the President of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery (JSPCCS). Additionally, he is a clinical professor at Kyoto University.

Jenny Zablah, MD is a Congenital Interventional Cardiologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus. Her clinical expertise includes the care of infants, children and adults with congenital heart disease and specifically, performing diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations on these patients. Her research interests include the development of 3D imaging technology (3D rotational angiograms, fusion imaging, 3D printing and virtual reality) and its application for procedural guidance, especially in procedures like pulmonary valve replacement. She has special interest on pulmonary valve replacement timing, techniques and new technology development.

Bryan H. Goldstein, MD is Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Interventional Cardiology Service at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Goldstein’s clinical expertise is in congenital cardiac catheterization. He is interested in invasive physiologic assessment of complex congenital heart disease (CHD), including single ventricle physiology, as well as minimally invasive transcatheter therapies. Dr. Goldstein has particular clinical interests in transcatheter valve therapies, neonatal palliations (including PDA stent and RVOT stent), complex pulmonary artery rehabilitation and innovative hybrid therapies. Goldstein’s research interests include novel transcatheter interventions and long-term outcomes following interventions for CHD. He is co-founder and Vice President of the Congenital Catheterization Research Collaborative (CCRC), a multicenter research group that aims to improve care for children and young adults with CHD through the conduct of rigorous outcomes research. An additional research focus includes long-term functional outcomes in Fontan survivors, including investigations of vascular function and ventricular diastolic function in the Fontan population.

Clara Kurishima, MD is a neonatologist and underwent a fellowship in pediatric cardiology and ACHD at Saitama Medical University. Her fellowship was under the supervision of Prof. Senzaki Hideaki. Dr. Kurishima also did her fellowships at Tokyo Women’s Medical University, Fukuoka Children’s Hospital and pediatric anesthesiology at Nagano Children’s Hospital. From 2017 to 2020 Dr. Kurishima had the opportunity to do research at the Cardiovascular Research Center of Temple University. Her research field is focused on cardiac function and metabolism in heart failure and through her career she had patients of all ages. From the viewpoint of cardiac function, Dr. Kurishima strives to seek the intervention with treatment that is at the most suitable times in the lives of her patients.

Moderators:

Laura M. Mercer-Rosa, MD, MSCE is a board-certified attending cardiologist in the Cardiac Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. As a pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Laura Mercer-Rosa focuses on providing the best possible care for her own patients at CHOP. As a clinical epidemiologist, she expands her scope, studying the outcomes of treatments for hundreds of children at hospitals far and wide. Dr. Mercer-Rosa is interested in congenital heart disease, particularly Tetralogy of Fallot, a complex condition involving four distinct defects of the heart and nearby blood vessels.

Satoshi Yasukochi, MD, FAHA is a graduate from Shinshu University, Japan in 1981. Dr. Yasukochi trained at Yokosuka Naval Hospital as an intern from 1981 to 1982 then did his residency of general pediatrics at Shinshu University from 1982 to 1987. From 1987 to 1989, Dr. Yasukochi did a clinical fellowship of pediatric cardiology at Tokyo Women’s Medical University (TWMU) and became assistant professor of pediatric cardiology at TWMU in 1989. From 1990 to 1993, he was a research fellow at the Department of Anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins University and Cornell Medical University New York Hospital. From 1993 to 2001, Dr. Yasukochi worked as a subdirector for the Department of Pediatric Cardiology at Nagano Children’s Hospital then was promoted to director of the Department of Pediatric Cardiology in 2001. Currently, Dr. Satoshi Yasukochi serves as the director of the Heart Center and Echo-Imaging Center at Nagano Children’s Hospital since 2014.
