Innovations in social networking, science, and technology must be guided by consideration of their social and environmental impact for the flourishing of all humanity. New forms of energy, AI, robotics, and GMO carry many exciting opportunities as well as great risks. They can both help solve or exacerbate many problems such as wealth inequality, homelessness, environmental degradation, climate change, food insecurity, unemployment, mass migration, and even physical and mental health. These issues have reached critical levels that threaten social and environmental stability and security in many countries worldwide. At the same time, many financial, corporate, and government institutions have begun to withdraw support for net zero or social empowerment programs.
A social business framework inherently takes social good and not just profit as its guiding principle. This conference is a timely call to action bringing together social business entrepreneurs, academic researchers, policy makers, and financial institutions to build a new path towards a more sustainable, fair, and socially responsible world. The conference launches Chulalongkorn University’s Yunus Center at the Social Research Institute (CUSRI).
