This workshop builds on the skills covered in the Intro to Navigation events that I run through Eventbrite. To get the most out of this workshop, you should be confident in reading symbols on an Ordnance Survey map, orientating the map using a compass, and understanding what contours are and how they appear on these maps.
This workshop covers the following:
How to determine path direction from the compass alone
How to calculate speed, distance and time to plan your navigation and relocate
How to include, and move safely across, Access Land using the map and compass
How to take a bearing (though we will not be following bearings in the class)
We will be starting from Mytholmroyd Community Centre at 1000hrs and returning to the same point at around 1600hrs. We may arrive back a little earlier than planned depending on progress and weather.
You will need waterproof clothing, something to eat, something to drink, and any personal medications you require. If you have an Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure 21 map with you, please bring this along although I will provide you with one if you do not yet have a copy. If you have a compass, please also bring this with you, though I also have one.
If you plan to park at the Community Centre, please be advised you will need to download the RingGo App and pay for your stay.
Our route will go up to around 400 meters, with rocky and potentially muddy paths. We will be aiming to summit Stoodley Pike weather permitting. For answers to common questions, please see FAQs below.
