Friday, August 16 at 8:30 PM, Unheard-of Ensemble and the San Antonio River Foundation invites the public to a free, one-night-only concert at Confluence Park featuring original works by emerging composers from across the country. Blending contemporary music with place-based inspiration, this performance reimagines the San Antonio River as a living score—full of history, sound, and movement.
The concert is the final event of the Collaborative Composition Initiative (CCI), a national weeklong workshop hosted by New York-based Unheard-of Ensemble. During the program, 13 visiting composers present concerts, installations across the city, from the San Antonio Missions and Confluence Park. Unheard of also enlists professionals from San Antonio and across the globe to present music lectures and performances. This year guests include Part Music from Germany and local Pamela Martinez who is known for creative immersive site specific work inspired by native plants and historical spaces. This year Martinez will introduce these 13 composers to the ecological and cultural significance of the San Antonio River—on the Mission Reach and present an immersive concert at Confluence Park.
“This river is one of our region’s most powerful teachers,” says Pamela Martinez, San Antonio artist and Community Engagement Manager at the River Foundation. “We want these composers to experience not just the beauty of the water, but the layers of meaning embedded in it—from its indigenous roots to today’s restoration efforts.”
Composers will present new short pieces inspired by site visits, poetic prompts, and environmental soundscapes collected during the residency. The performance features NYC’s Unheard-of Ensemble and German experimental group PART Music, with selections ranging from acoustic chamber music to multimedia and electronic works.
