'Inside Georgetown: Rags to Riches in DC's Oldest Neighborhood' Webinar
Overview
Founded fifty years before the creation of Washington, DC, Georgetown began as a gritty port town along the Potomac River — famously dismissed by Abigail Adams as a “dirty little hole.” From these humble origins, it evolved into one of the most prestigious and desirable neighborhoods in the District, filled with stories of commerce, conflict, and transformation that trace the nation’s own rise from frontier to capital. It’s time to uncover the hidden history and timeless charm of Washington’s oldest neighborhood.
Join New York Adventure Club as we uncover the remarkable journey of Washington, DC’s Georgetown neighborhood, from its early days as a rough 18th-century port to later becoming one of the capital’s most refined and storied enclaves.
Led by Carolyn Muraskin, architectural historian and founder of DC Design Tours, our unique virtual experience will include:
- Old Stone House — built in 1765, the oldest home in Washington still stands on its original foundation, offering a rare glimpse into Georgetown’s colonial roots amid today’s boutiques and cafés
- The Car Barn — once a bustling streetcar terminal and symbol of Georgetown’s industrial era, later transformed into one of the neighborhood’s most distinctive landmarks
- Georgetown University — founded in 1789, this renowned Jesuit institution grew from a modest college into a world-class university whose Gothic spires of Healy Hall dominate the city skyline
- Chesapeake & Ohio Canal — once the economic lifeline of Georgetown, carrying coal and goods to the capital, now a peaceful towpath where nature and history meet
- Civil War & Preservation Legacy — how Georgetown’s stately homes became wartime hospitals and, a century later, sparked a movement to preserve the neighborhood’s historic fabric
- Jackie Kennedy House — this elegant Federal-style home on N Street served as Jackie Kennedy’s post–White House residence and helped inspire Georgetown’s revival as a symbol of American elegance
Stick around afterward for a Q&A with Carolyn — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
