Frequently asked questions

What is Satsang?

Satsang, if translated literally, means 'to be with' transcendental energy. What is practiced in these sessions is a method established by Guru Maharaj, Dr. Chaturbhuj Sahay ji, founder of Ramashram Satsang Mathura.

What is Ramashram Satsang Mathura?

Founded by Guru Maharaj, Dr. Chaturbhuj Sahay ji, in 1930 in northern India. Ramashram - Ram's Ashram or the home of Mahatma Ram Chandra ji (Guru Maharaj's Guru). Satsang - A unique practice that incorporates meditation, service, community and Guru's guidance. Mathura - A northern Indian town.

What can I expect during a Satsang session?

Meditation is at the core of Satsang sessions, and always include a deep silent meditation on transcendental light for 20 to 30 minutes. Sessions typically last about 60 to 90 minutes.

Do I need prior meditation experience to attend?

No prior experience is necessary. Satsang is open to everyone, regardless of their level of experience with meditation. Beginners are welcome and will receive guidance during the session.

How often and when should I meditate?

Guru Maharaj prescribed twice a day, for 15 to 20 minutes, as that would be enough to build a strong individual practice, provided it is consistent. Time of meditation could be your choice, based on your schedule. Group sessions once or twice a week are encouraged to support the individual practice.

What is a good posture for meditation?

Any still but relaxed posture is fine. Sitting on a chair or on the ground. Lotus pose with spine straight used to be the preferred way but now it is flexible.

Is there a fee to attend Satsang?

Historically, Satsang sessions have been free and participants contribute at will only if they want to, there is no such expectation. Donations are appreciated and help support the Satsang community. However, no one is turned away due to lack of funds, even for the paid services like courses.

How can I join online?

We have been leveraging online sessions via video conferencing platforms, like Zoom and WebEx, since 2010. Sessions also can be attended through YouTube Live. Check with the organizers for details on how to join virtually at sanjiv@ramashram.in. On RSVP for an event, you get meeting link via email!

What is the schedule for Satsang sessions?

Satsang Workshop (75 minute session) is held weekly on Saturdays (at 10AM EST US Eastern Time). Beginners Orientation session (45 minutes) is held on Tuesdays (at 7AM EST US Eastern time) – For advanced practitioners, it works as a practice session and their presence helps the collective energy.

How can I contact the organizers if I have questions?

You are encouraged to ask questions after the meditation in the Satsang sessions, as that helps other practitioners, as well. But you can always ask any questions at sanjiv@ramashram.in

Is Satsang affiliated with a specific religion?

Guru was God for Guru Maharaj, Dr. Chaturbhuj Sahay ji, but he didn’t impose that on anyone. He also didn’t want anyone to call him Guru, so he was brother, father or a friend to many of his followers. Satsang is non-denominational and open to people of all beliefs and backgrounds.

I’m Sanjiv Kumar, a lifelong meditator, IT software architect, and spiritual guide. My journey into mindfulness and meditation began at an early age, deeply influenced by my grandfather, Dr. Chaturbhuj Sahay Ji (Guru Maharaj)—a revered spiritual teacher dedicated to enlightenment and helping thousands find inner peace.

For over 40 years, I have practiced meditation, and for the past 20+ years, I have been leading transformative meditation sessions across India, America, and Europe. My mission is to expand Guru Maharaj’s teachings and share his wisdom with people worldwide—helping them lead more peaceful, purpose-driven lives.

Beyond my spiritual practice, I have built a successful career as an IT Software Architect and AI expert, leading teams in New York City and Washington, D.C. While technology has shaped my professional path, my true calling has always been guiding others toward calmness, clarity, and spiritual growth.

Together with my wife, Reena, I host meditation retreats, online sessions, and in-person gatherings to help individuals elevate their consciousness and find deeper fulfillment.
