Presentation Topic: Modern Security Posture Management: Solving the Hardest Problems with Cloud and APIs

In cybersecurity, we have been taught for a long time that there are certain non-negotiable fundamentals, like protecting data, securing apps, and maintaining visibility across our environments. Anyone who has worked in the field knows these fundamentals are historically difficult to do well. Traditional infrastructure rarely offers the access or context needed to manage these challenges effectively. That is now changing. The rise of cloud computing and modern APIs has opened the door for a new generation of security posture management tools that can finally operate with the depth, speed, and scale we have needed all along.

While cloud and APIs are often seen as risk vectors, complex systems that introduce attack surfaces and require constant oversight are making these new capabilities possible. Rather than viewing cloud and APIs through a “lens of risk,” this talk will explore how they can be powerful enablers, giving security teams the visibility and control they have historically lacked. This also addresses hardest and most persistent problems in the field.

Michael Farnum, cybersecurity executive and founder of HOU.SEC.CON, will walk through how modern security posture tools are helping security teams make real progress on long-standing security challenges. He will break down where these tools are gaining traction, how they leverage APIs and cloud-native architecture, and why now is the time to rethink how we approach the fundamentals

Speaker: Michael Farnum, Advisory CISO, President/Co-Founder of HOU.SEC.CON

Speaker Bio: Michael Farnum is an Advisory CISO. He has been in the IT and Information Security fields since 1994. During this time, Michael has held numerous senior cybersecurity leadership, consulting, and architecture roles in various industries such as healthcare, staffing, and software development. Michael has spent the last several years working for cybersecurity solutions providers in the consulting, application security, and reseller spaces, where he has helped numerous organizations assess and build their security and compliance programs.

In 2010, Michael founded HOU.SEC.CON, a cybersecurity conference in Houston, with over 2000 attendees annually. In addition to organizing a security conference, Michael often speaks at conferences such as RSA, Infosecurity Europe, and several BSides events, and he is also a prolific cybersecurity podcaster.

Michael is a Gulf War veteran who served for over 7+ years in the US Army and Army Nation Guard as an M1A1 main battle tank crewman, combat engineer, and communications specialist.
