Join Indiana Audubon for an unforgettable birding adventure in Michigan’s scenic Upper Peninsula! This fall caravanning tour takes you to the heart of the Northwoods, where the renowned Whitefish Point Bird Observatory offers unmatched opportunities to witness the wonders of fall migration. With its strategic location along Lake Superior, Whitefish Point and nearby Paradise are a hotspot for waterfowl, Northwoods specialties, and elusive boreal species.

Participants are expected to arrive Friday evening for a check-in and group dinner (optional birding for those arriving in early afternoon). Over the next two days, we'll rise early for sunrise lakewatch conditions at Whitefish Point, scanning for sought-after species like Spruce Grouse, Red-necked Grebe, Long-tailed Duck, and migrating waterfowl. After a sack lunch, afternoons will be spent exploring the area’s rich birding sites, with optional visits to local attractions like the fascinating Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum and Tahquamenon Falls State Park.

Some fall migrant targets inland include Spruce Grouse, Ruffed Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, Evening Grosbeak, Canada Jay, and winter finches. Evenings feature relaxed group dinners and, if owl banding conditions allow, we'll explore one of the largest Project Owlnet sites in the country. A final lakewatch opportunity on Monday will wrap up our birding, and we'll depart for home after hotel check out.

This trip is perfect for birders of all levels eager to experience the magic of fall migration. Accommodations include three nights at the conveniently located Paradise Inn and Suites, with breakfast provided daily. Participants will pack their own lunches, while dinner in local restaurants are included in the trip cost.

A portion of the trip proceeds will be donated to the new Friends of Whitefish Point, supporting ongoing conservation efforts in this vital region.

Richard Garrett is a long-time Indiana Audubon member and current IAS Board President. He has birded the eastern Upper Penninsula in the fall and has led countless Audubon birding trips and tours.

Indiana Audubon Field Trip Ratings for This Trip

Birding Pace: Extended Tour. Multiple days with early starts. On certain days guests may have the opportunity to take a break from the regular activities to enjoy an afternoon at the hotel. Joining for the early morning birding is highly encouraged as it is the bird’s most active time.
Physical Requirements: Easy to Moderate. Participants can expect one or two miles or more of hiking per day at a birding pace on generally level terrain. Beaches can feature short sand walks near Whitefish Point.
Birding Skill Level: Beginner to mid-level. An extensive knowledge of local species is not necessary, but participants should be familiar with most bird families. Studying expected species prior to the trip is encouraged.

The trip size is 6-10 participants. Prices are based on double occupancy.
