Description
Every year, the U.S. immigration system tears thousands of immigrants with convictions from their homes, their families, and their communities. In 2018, ICE deported more than 250,000 community members, and currently detains approximately 49,000 individuals. This number has skyrocketed in recent years, as the war on immigrants has escalated to new heights through campaigns driven by fear, hatred, racism, and lies.
The Immigrant Defense Project (IDP) works to tackle this unjust system through advocacy, training, litigation, alliance building, and education.
"Indefensible: Immigrants Trapped by the Criminalization of the Immigration Process" will present multiple perspectives on ICE raids, detention, deportations, immigration detention, and mass incarceration. Learn how to fight back against the violence of criminalization, and for the rights of immigrants at the intersection of the criminal and immigrant systems.
Our expert panel will include Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York’s 14th District, as well as Alina Das, NYU Law Professor; Jonathan Jayes-Green, activist and co-founder of The UnDocuBlack Network; and Alejandra Pablos, activist and immigrant leader facing deportation. IDP Deputy Director Mizue Aizeki will moderate.
This educational forum—offered free and open to the public—is organized by JusticeAid in support of IDP's efforts to end the vilification of immigrants and the violence of detention and deportation that is causing deep harm to our communities. A music benefit with Los Lobos will take place the following evening, April 16th, at The Hamilton in Washington, DC. Learn more about the Forum, the Music Benefit, and JusticeAid's 2019 beneficiary at JusticeAid.org.
FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. DOORS OPEN AT 6:00 PM AND THE FORUM BEGINS AT 6:30 PM.
