In the Middle: Navigating Ethics and Boundaries with Caregivers in Child Therapy

Training Description:

Working with children in therapy inherently involves collaboration with caregivers—yet navigating the ethical and relational complexities of these connections can be challenging. This 3-hour interactive training is designed for child and family therapists who use play, sandtray, and expressive therapies. Participants will explore best practices in setting and maintaining ethical boundaries, handling confidential information, and managing the unique dynamics that arise when balancing the needs of both the child and their caregivers.

Using real-world examples, case scenarios, and reflective discussions, this training will help therapists strengthen their clinical judgment and cultural responsiveness while maintaining the integrity of the therapeutic relationship. Special focus will be placed on working with adoptive, foster, and kinship caregivers and understanding how trauma and attachment dynamics impact ethical decision-making.

Learning Objectives (APA Style):

  1. Identify at least three common ethical challenges that arise when working with caregivers in child and family therapy settings, including issues related to confidentiality, informed consent, and role clarity.
  2. Analyze the impact of boundary-setting on the therapeutic alliance with both the child client and caregivers, particularly in the context of trauma, adoption, and attachment-based work.
  3. Apply ethical decision-making models and cultural humility principles to real-life scenarios involving caregiver requests, disclosures, and dual relationships in play and expressive therapy.
