Rates of school avoidance have improved since the COVID-19 shutdown, but they continue to be high, estimated at 5% to 12% of school-aged children. Designed for both school-based and community-based clinicians, this presentation addresses the critical need for effective, evidence-based approaches to working with students who exhibit school avoidance.
We will explore School Attendance Problems (SAPs) as a spectrum, look at various underlying causes and case studies, and discuss corresponding interventions. Liz will provide a succinct and focused review of relevant research and practical applications.
After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Identify underlying reasons for school avoidance and refusal, including bullying, unaddressed anxiety, family stressors, health issues, and safety concerns at school
- Describe approaches for assessing family and school-based reinforcement patterns for school avoidance, using the data to develop targeted interventions
- Apply therapeutic techniques, such as exposure therapy and systematic desensitization, to reverse school avoidance behaviors
