Founded in 2018, In Cultured Company is a political education, narrative change and leadership development organization committed to building social justice, racial equity, healing justice and a lasting peace between Dominicans and Haitians. We hold a vision for a sacred and interconnected island that is healed through love, liberation and belonging.
The Decolonizing 'Hispaniola' Conference is a two day gathering for Dominicans and Haitians to do the hard work of learning long-hidden histories, healing from historical trauma, and learning about social justice and activism.
Day One of this conference will guide participants to develop a deeper understanding of our shared history and a critical analysis of current events related to immigration and citizenship in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the U.S.
Day Two will focus on healing justice, and how to build the skills for empathy, communication, connection, and long-term activism and advocacy.
We will explore the following questions:
- What does justice look like on the island of Hispaniola/Ayiti?
- How can we be in radical solidarity with each other and with our peers living on our island?
- How do we build community and personal stamina as activists working towards that vision of justice?
- What forms of personal and communal healing of historical trauma need to happen to make that vision of justice possible? How can we practice that healing right now?
- How does our common culture fuel our activism?
WHAT'S INCLUDED IN YOUR TICKET:
Participants will walk away understanding the policy, legal, political and other systemic barriers to achieving socioeconomic and racial justice, peace and reconciliation on our island. They will also have a chance to connect with organizers doing social justice work and an opportunity begin their own trajectories in activism with skills, knowledge and confidence.
All participants will receive a conference program, lunch on both days and non-alcoholic drinks and snacks for our Saturday evening cocktail hour.
