Much of California’s culture, diversity and vibrancy is due to the hard work and ingenuity of our large immigrant community. But the vast majority of them don’t arrive with education and economic privilege and usually have to set aside educational aspirations in order to take multiple low-wage jobs to support their families. SV2 Community Partner / Grantee, Upward Scholars, supports adult immigrant learners with financial and academic support so they can transition from adult schools to successfully attend community colleges and four-year programs.

In our Get Proximate experience with Upward Scholars, we'll connect with Adult Learners / Scholars as they share their immigrant and academic journeys. We'll then have casual small group discussion similar to one of Upward Scholars' popular programs, Conversation Clubs, that help Scholars practice speaking English in a safe, virtual, and comfortable environment.

This session is being held on a Friday night, not a typical time for SV2, because it is one of the few free times these students have in the week due to multiple work and academic schedules as well as family time. We hope you will be able to join us in this opportunity to get a closer look into what it means to be an adult learner, one who faces the additional challenges of language and access.

This session will be held in virtual format via Zoom. The meeting access info will be sent via Eventbrite confirmation emails. To access the meeting info, Eventbrite will require you to log in or create an account if you don’t already have one.

You will receive confirmation emails from Eventbrite 48 hours before the event, 2 hours before the event, and as the event begins. In any of these confirmation emails, click the orange “Go to online event page” box. This will take you to a screen with a gray “video” square. When you're ready to join the meeting, click on the arrow in the gray square, which will take you to the Zoom meeting.
