Join us for a conversation with research scientists at Carnegie Mellon University on the changing landscape of data sharing in their life science disciplines. New policies from funders, such as the NIH, that maximize the sharing of grant-funded research will shift the way in which scientists think about doing and sharing their work. We will explore how these policies will impact the health psychology, molecular biology, and systems neuroscience research communities and and what kind of opportunities and challenges they will present. This conversation will be moderated by Ana Van Gulick of Figshare and Huajin Wang of Center for Open Science.

Janine Dutcher, Senior Research Scientist, Carnegie Mellon University

Janine Dutcher is a Senior Research Scientist (Special Faculty) in Psychology and the Lab Director for the Health & Human Performance Lab at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research seeks to understand how positive interventions and experiences (e.g., self-affirmation, mindfulness meditation, social support) may lead to reductions in threat and stress responding. She uses multiple methods, including neuroimaging and psychoneuroimmunology, to explore how these processes have effects on physical health and well-being, with the ultimate goal of finding ways to help individuals build resilience. She received her B.S. in Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University and her Ph.D. in Psychology from UCLA.

Joel McManus, Associate Professor, Carnegie Mellon University

Joel McManus is an Associate Professor in the Biological Sciences and the Computational Biology departments at Carnegie Mellon University. The McManus lab develops and employs novel high-throughput assay systems to identify RNA cis-regulatory elements and structures, and then quantitate their impact on mRNA translation using massively parallel reporter systems. We computationally mine the resulting data to distill features and develop models that predict the functions of mRNA transcript leaders. Joel received his Ph.D. in Biomolecular Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Eric Yttri, Associate Professor, Carnegie Mellon University

Eric Yttri is an Eberly Family Associate Professor in the Biological Sciences department and the Neuroscience Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. The Yttri lab interrogates the functional interactions of the motor circuit (motor cortex, basal ganglia, midbrain dopamine nuclei) that lead to skilled behavior. They combine a diverse set of behavioral, physiological, and computational tools to determine the neural mechanisms of motor behavior and movement diseases. Eric received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Washington University in St. Louis.

Ana Van Gulick, Government and Funder Lead and Head of Data Review at Figshare

Ana Van Gulick received a Ph.D. in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience from Vanderbilt University in 2014 and has worked on data management, data sharing, and open science practices and infrastructure for the past 9 years including previously as faculty at the Carnegie Mellon University Libraries leading their Open Science Program and within the neuroscience research community. She joined the research repository, Figshare, in 2020 where she manages repository projects for US Federal Agencies and public and private research funders including for the NIH Generalist Repository Ecosystem Initiative as well as leading Figshare's Data Curation Service supporting FAIR data and the Figshare+ repository for large datasets.

Huajin Wang, Director of Programs at the Center for Open Science

Huajin Wang oversees the development and implementation of training, education, and consulting services, to help a wide range of research communities engage in open and reproducible research practices across the research lifecycle. Her work helps to make the process of open and reproducible research easy and rewarding by co-constructing solutions with various stakeholders in the research ecosystem. She also holds a faculty position (on leave) at Carnegie Mellon University Libraries, with a research focus on open science methodology and assessments and secondary reuse of biomedical data. She completed her Ph.D. in Cell Biology at University of Alberta and postdoctoral research at Yale/Harvard, where she worked with complex, multimodal data on lipid metabolism and membrane trafficking.
