This course introduces and defines implicit and explicit biases, exploring the manifestations of the biases and how they impact social work practices, with an emphasis on delving into the effect on client interactions and outcomes. This course emphasizes equipping social workers with strategies to identify and mitigate their own biases and to advocate for more equitable and inclusive practices.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify and discuss implicit and explicit bias, their differences, and how both can manifest in social work practice.
- Examine the NASW Code of Ethics and use it as a framework to explore and discuss implicit and explicit bias contextually in the social work field.
- Analyze 5 specific types of implicit bias and their potential impacts on social work.
- Practice identification of implicit and/or explicit bias through case study examination.
