IMPACT Hour: Start Building a Thinking Classroom with Toolkit #1
Overview
At Keep Indiana Learning, we know educators need professional learning that fits into their busy schedules and makes a real difference. You’ll get bite-sized professional learning sessions with big results. In just one hour, participants move through a cycle of learning: identifying needs, seeing strategies modeled, practicing new ideas, applying them to their own work, checking for understanding, and taking back actionable tools for immediate use.
In this hour we’ll give you what you need to get started building your own thinking classroom. Toolkit #1, covering the first three chapters of Peter Liljedahl’s book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, discusses the benefits of using non-curricular tasks, the benefits of visibly random grouping, and the transformative nature of vertical non-permanent surfaces.
In this hour you will learn:
- when to use non-curricular tasks, why they are useful, and gain access to a variety of sample tasks you can begin using tomorrow.
- why visibly random groups are so effective, what impact they can have on your classroom community, and how to implement them efficiently.
- what research shows about the power of vertical non-permanent surfaces, and how you can transform your classroom into an engaging community of learners.
You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of Toolkit #1 and the inspiration and actionable moves to begin building your own thinking classroom.
