IMPACT Education Series: Applied Computational Science

Data science is an emerging professional practice defined by computational techniques and related technologies. Over the last two decades, it has gained increased recognition as a professional practice and an applied mathematical and computational discipline. Recognition of terms like “data lakes” confirms an exponential growth in volume and in the importance of information available to end-use applications relevant to these and other data domains.

Computational science encompasses a broad set of disciplines-including traditional topics covered in fields such as computer science, information theory, modeling and simulation, control and automation, and cybernetics (or system) science. These technical fields are further distinguished by the application domains where they are applied like aerospace, medicine, economics, and many more.

Further, we recognize that the analysis and extraction of information from data sets involve both post and continuous (i.e., real-time) processing. Typically, data is derived from transactional, or client-server, connections or from connections to physical processes, IoT devices for example, whose behaviors unfold in geospatial, info-spatial, and socio-spatial environments. The inclusion of real-time semantics, like deadline scheduled analytics, adds complexity and nuance to the underlying data science.

Join us for our April 29th NMDSI IMPACT Education Series where Dr. Jay Bayne, Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at UW-Milwaukee, will provide a brief lecture that will introduce the topic of Computational Science in greater detail.
