The US Drug Supply Chain Security Act seeks to protect supply chain communications from bad actors in the market for pharmaceuticals. Among other mechanisms, it enforces this by requiring the verifiable authorization of all trading partners. Together with SAP and Novartis, we tested an electronic authentication and verification method for trading partners in the Saleable Product Verification process using blockchain-secured Identity Wallets. We will present the core findings of our proof-of-concept and are open to discuss the impact of this project with the community. We will also give an outlook on the next steps and how decentralized identity and verifiable credentials can solve additional DSCSA requirements.

David Mason is currently the AD North America Serialization – Supply Chain, supporting the implementation of DSCSA for the Novartis group. He is leading the efforts for setting up systems and processes for ESO, supply chain and commercial operations. Dave represents Novartis in trade associations, PDSA and FDA public meetings. He communicates to the NTO Global Serialization team with new and existing requirements for other countries, and he ensures that all parties’ validation approaches and on-site execution are consistent within the organization. Dave also supports the team to develop a global master validation and TPO rollout plan.

Dr. Oliver Nuernberg holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Würzburg, Germany, and has worked in Pharmaceutical IT for 23 years. Oliver joined SAP in 1997 and held various positions in Life Sciences Solution Management as well as Development. Oliver took over the responsibility for SAP’s Life Sciences product portfolio in September of 2014 and designed SAP’s Track-and-Trace strategy for the pharmaceutical industry.

Dr. Michael Rüther co-founded Spherity GmbH. He holds a degree in industrial engineering with a PhD. in Business Informatics from the University of Paderborn. Prior to founding Spherity GmbH, Dr. Rüther founded two other companies and worked for the utility company RWE, the mechanical engineering company SMS Demag, the Fraunhofer Research Institute, and Thyssen Krupp´s automotive business unit in senior management positions. He is the Project manager of our US DSCSA authorized trading partner implementation project.
